Stamped Concrete Application Technique

Colour Hardener (Dry Shake)

The coloured hardener, broadcast onto the fresh concrete surface and worked in with a trowel, both increases surface strength and provides the colour. Because it markedly raises the abrasion resistance of the surface, it is important in areas open to traffic.

Imprinting the Pattern with Mats

After the release powder is broadcast, polyurethane mats are pressed into the concrete surface to create a natural stone, timber or brick texture. Applying the mats at the right moment and with even pressure determines the quality of the result.

Washing and Protective Sealer

Once the concrete has hardened sufficiently, the release powder is washed off and an acrylic-based protective sealer is applied to the surface. The sealer enriches the colour, reduces soiling and contributes to freeze-thaw resistance.

The Application Process

• 1. Substrate and drainage preparation: The substrate is compacted and, where necessary, a stabilised layer is laid. A fall of at least 1-2% is planned for water drainage.
• 2. Mesh reinforcement and concrete pouring: Steel mesh is positioned and concrete of the appropriate class is poured and screeded.
• 3. Broadcasting the colour hardener: Once the concrete surface has taken up its water, the hardener is broadcast in two stages and worked into the surface with a trowel.
• 4. Mat application: Release powder is broadcast and the mats are pressed in to create the pattern. Edge and corner details are completed by hand.
• 5. Joint cutting, washing and sealing: Joints are cut to control shrinkage cracking. The surface is then washed and the protective sealer is applied.

Technical Notes and Standards

• If joint cutting is neglected the concrete will crack at random; joint spacing and depth must be determined according to the slab thickness.
• In regions where freeze-thaw effects are significant, the use of air-entrained concrete increases durability.
• The protective sealer wears over time; periodic renewal is required to preserve both appearance and durability.
• Around pools and on sloping areas, a sealer with an anti-slip additive should be preferred.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does stamped concrete crack?

Concrete shrinks by its very nature. Controlled joint cutting is therefore essential; the joints determine where the concrete will crack. With a correct joint layout, a suitable concrete class and mesh reinforcement, unwanted cracks are prevented.

Does it become slippery?

When wet, slipperiness can increase, particularly on surfaces with a gloss sealer. Around pools, on ramps and on sloping areas the use of a sealer with an anti-slip additive is recommended. Texture depth also contributes to slip resistance.

How is it maintained?

Regular cleaning and periodic renewal of the protective sealer are sufficient. When the sealer is renewed the vividness of the colour returns. Because the use of salt in winter can damage the surface, it should be avoided where possible.

Can it be applied over existing concrete?

Classic stamped concrete is applied to fresh concrete. If there is sound existing concrete, thin-layer decorative surfacing systems (sprayed or trowel-stamped) are preferred; these systems require no demolition.
