Polyurethane Floor Systems

Elastic Coatings

These are systems with high elongation at break; they can bridge the fine cracks that form in the concrete beneath. In areas with temperature differences and vibration they offer a marked advantage over epoxy. They also provide underfoot comfort and sound damping.

Rigid Polyurethane Systems

These are systems with a hardness close to that of epoxy but with better impact resistance. They are preferred where a balance between chemical resistance and flexibility is sought.

UV-Resistant Aliphatic Top Coats

These retain their colour stability outdoors and in areas receiving plenty of light. By applying an aliphatic polyurethane top coat over an epoxy body coat, both chemical resistance and UV protection can be achieved together.

The Application Process

  • 1. Floor analysis and moisture measurement: The strength, flatness and relative humidity of the concrete are measured. Because polyurethane systems are affected by moisture, this measurement is essential.
  • 2. Mechanical preparation: The surface is opened up by grinding or blasting; loose layers and remnants of the old coating are removed.
  • 3. Joint and crack solutions: Moving joints are carried through into the coating and filled with an elastic sealant. Static cracks are repaired with resin.
  • 4. Primer: A primer suited to the surface and its moisture condition is selected; moisture-barrier primers are used on concrete with high moisture content.
  • 5. Coating and top coat: The body coat is applied, aggregate is broadcast where required to provide slip resistance, and the top coat is laid.

Technical Notes and Standards

  • Polyurethane systems are more elastic than epoxy; they are preferred on floors with moving cracks and thermal expansion.
  • In conditions of high ambient humidity, curing accelerates and blisters can form on the surface; the application conditions must be monitored.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which is more durable, polyurethane or epoxy?

We are talking about different kinds of durability. Epoxy is harder and more resistant to chemicals; polyurethane is more resistant to impact, thermal shock and movement. If there is a risk of cracking and a change of temperature in the floor, polyurethane is chosen; if chemical exposure is the priority, epoxy is chosen.

Can it be used outdoors?

Yes, and this is one of the areas in which polyurethane is strongest. Its UV resistance is higher than that of epoxy; together with an aliphatic top coat, colour stability is maintained for a long time. Upper car park decks and terraces are typical application areas.

Can it be applied in a cold store?

Yes. Thanks to its elastic structure it does not become brittle at low temperatures and tolerates thermal movement. During application the ambient temperature must meet the product's requirements; temporary heating is provided if necessary.

Can it be applied over an existing epoxy coating?

If the existing coating is sound and fully bonded to the surface, polyurethane can be applied with a suitable primer after roughening by sanding. If there is debonding or blistering, the problem areas must be removed first.
