The Structure of the Micro Concrete System

The Logic of Layered Application

It consists of several layers: a primer, a mesh-reinforced base coat, a fine decorative coat and a protective top coat. The total thickness is generally around 2–3 mm, which means it can be applied without raising the floor level or creating problems under doors.

Texture and Colour Options

Very different appearances are achieved through the movement of the trowel, the fineness of the grain and the gloss of the top coat. Colour pigments are added to the mortar; because every application carries its own texture, the surface acquires a handmade character.

Protective Top Coat

A clear polyurethane or acrylic-based top coat protects the surface against staining and wear. In wet areas this layer is essential in terms of watertightness and cleanability.

The Application Process

• 1. Floor inspection: The soundness, flatness and any hollow areas of the existing surface are checked. Loose tiles are removed and filled.
• 2. Primer: A primer suited to the type of surface is applied; special adhesion-promoting primers are used on ceramic tiles and surfaces with low absorbency.
• 3. Base coat and mesh: Reinforcing mesh is embedded while the first coat is applied. The mesh reduces the reflection of the joints and cracks beneath through to the surface.
• 4. Decorative coats: The fine coat is trowel-applied at least twice; the desired texture and flatness are achieved by sanding between coats.
• 5. Protective top coat: The clear protection is applied in two or three coats. A choice is made between matt, satin and gloss options according to the space.

Technical Notes and Standards

• Micro concrete is a decorative covering; it is not designed for heavy industrial loads and impact.
• Moving cracks beneath can still reflect through to the surface over time even if mesh is used; moving joints must be carried through into the covering.
• In wet areas, waterproofing must be dealt with as a separate layer; micro concrete on its own is not waterproofing.
• Periodic renewal of the protective top coat preserves the appearance and stain resistance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can it be applied without breaking out my tiles?

Yes, and this is one of its greatest advantages. If the existing tiles are sound and not hollow-sounding, it can be applied directly over them with a suitable primer and mesh reinforcement. Breaking out, debris and a long period of disruption are all avoided.

Will the joint lines show through to the surface?

A correctly applied mesh-reinforced base coat greatly reduces this risk. However, if the tiles beneath are moving or hollow-sounding, the lines may become visible over time. Inspection of the floor before application is therefore critical.

Can it be used in a bathroom?

Yes, and it is frequently chosen. However, in areas that receive water directly, such as the shower area, a separate waterproofing layer must be provided beneath it and a suitable protective top coat applied over it. Micro concrete itself is not a waterproofing material.

Does it scratch or stain?

The protective top coat provides resistance to scratching and staining, but hard objects can scratch the surface. Acidic substances (lemon, vinegar) can leave a mark if left for a long time. Spills should be cleaned up quickly and the top coat renewed periodically.
