Polyurethane-Cement Technology

The Structure of the System

This is a hybrid system in which polyurethane resin, cement and selected aggregate are used together. Because the coefficient of thermal expansion of cement is close to that of concrete, the coating and the floor move together under temperature change. This property has made the system the standard in plants where steam cleaning is carried out.

Thermal Shock Resistance

It can withstand washing with hot water and steam at up to around 100 °C followed by rapid cooling. While epoxy systems separate from the floor in these conditions because of the difference in expansion, polyurethane cement retains its integrity.

Thickness and Texture Options

It is generally trowel-applied at a thickness of 4–9 mm. The surface texture can be adjusted from smooth to heavily textured options according to the slip resistance required on wet floors.

The Application Process

  • 1. Floor and drainage assessment: The strength of the concrete is measured; the drainage falls and the positions of the outlets are checked. In food plants the correct fall is as important for hygiene as the coating itself.
  • 2. Mechanical preparation and anchor grooves: The surface is opened up by shot blasting. Anchor grooves are cut at the foot of walls, around outlets and at door thresholds so that the coating is keyed in.
  • 3. Primer or direct application: A primer is applied according to the type of system; some polyurethane cement systems can be applied directly onto damp concrete.
  • 4. Trowel application: The mixture is prepared and spread with a trowel to form a surface of the required thickness. Because the working time is short, organised teamwork is essential.
  • 5. Coving and skirting details: A radiused cove is formed at wall-to-floor junctions to prevent dirt accumulating in the corner and to make cleaning easier.

  • Polyurethane cement is one of the few systems that can be applied to damp concrete; this is a great advantage on fresh floors and floors with moisture problems.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is this system in particular recommended in food plants?

In food plants the floor is washed several times a day with hot water and chemicals. Epoxy coatings cannot withstand this thermal shock for long and separate from the floor. Thanks to its cement content, polyurethane cement behaves similarly to concrete in expansion and retains its integrity in these conditions.

Can it really be applied to a damp floor?

Yes, and this is one of the most notable advantages of the system. Many polyurethane cement products work reliably at moisture levels where epoxy could not be applied. Even so, if there is continuously rising water in the floor, the source must be dealt with.

Does the surface become slippery?

This is controlled by the choice of texture. In food production areas worked wet, a textured finish giving high slip resistance is applied. Since cleaning becomes more difficult as texture increases, the balance between hygiene and safety is set according to how the area is used.

When can it be put back into service?

It can generally be opened to foot traffic 24 hours after application and to light vehicle traffic after 48 hours. Reaching full chemical resistance takes a few days. These times vary with the ambient temperature.
