Polyurea Technology and Application

Pure Polyurea

It is applied by spraying two components with special high-pressure, heated equipment. It gels within seconds and becomes walkable within minutes. Being insensitive to moisture and temperature, it delivers reliable results even in adverse site conditions.

Hybrid Polyurea

These are systems in which polyurea and polyurethane components are used together. The curing time is slightly longer, which is an advantage for surface smoothness and reduces cost. They are preferred on projects with moderate performance requirements.

Equipment and Applicator Requirements

Polyurea is a system in which the mixing ratio and temperature must be controlled precisely. Without suitable equipment and a trained applicator the required mechanical properties cannot be achieved. Application quality is therefore as decisive as the material itself.

The Application Process

  • 1. Surface preparation: Concrete surfaces are opened up by shot blasting or milling; on metal surfaces the correct roughness profile is achieved by grit blasting.
  • 2. Moisture and temperature checks: Surface moisture is measured and the dew point is calculated. Although polyurea tolerates moisture, surface conditions must be verified for adhesion.
  • 3. Priming: An epoxy or polyurethane primer suited to the substrate is applied. On porous concrete the primer prevents gas escape and therefore blistering.
  • 4. Spraying: Spraying is carried out with heated high-pressure equipment so that the required thickness is reached in a single pass. Equipment parameters are monitored continuously.
  • 5. Thickness check and return to service: Dry film thickness is measured and, where necessary, a spark (holiday) test is carried out to detect discontinuities. After a short curing period the area can be opened for use.

Technical Notes and Standards

  • Polyurea becomes walkable within minutes of application; this is its greatest advantage in facilities where production cannot be halted.
  • Thanks to its high elongation at break and tensile strength it performs outstandingly against impact and movement.
  • Aromatic polyurea changes colour under UV; if appearance matters, an aliphatic top coat must be applied.
  • Concrete surface protection systems are defined within the scope of TS EN 1504-2 .

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between polyurea and polyurethane?

Their chemical structures and curing mechanisms differ. Polyurea cures within seconds, is unaffected by moisture and offers higher mechanical strength. Polyurethane cures more slowly, is simpler to apply and costs less. Where time is limited and high performance is required, polyurea stands out.

Why is special equipment required?

The two components must be mixed in the correct ratio, at the correct temperature and at high pressure. The reaction is so fast that mixing takes place at the gun tip. It cannot be applied with standard paint equipment; incorrect parameters lead to loss of adhesion and strength.

Does the surface end up looking uneven?

Because it cures so quickly, spray marks can remain and the surface may not be as flat as polyurethane. In areas where appearance is critical, hybrid systems or a levelling top coat are preferred. In technical areas this is usually not a problem.

Can it be used in a drinking water tank?

Special formulations certified as suitable for human health are available. Standard industrial products are not suitable for contact with drinking water; on such projects the product's certification must always be checked.
